place mats at a wedding?

Sure, why not?! Okay, so they’re not traditional, but who cares! Okay, I get it, when you think of placemats, you think of gramma’s house which also has the couch wrapped in plastic. But think about a modern twist that placemats can provide that just your standard table cloth cant.

So when I think of reception tables, I think of a colored table cloth, centerpiece, three glasses (water, white wine, and red wine), two knifes, a spoon, and a fork. Sometimes there is charger plate or a regular plate with your napkin and sometimes a menu sitting on top. Pretty standard look.

When it comes down to changing up that standard decor, modern brides and their planners are choosing different kinds of tables. Old wooden barn tables have become popular, so spicing up the table with placemats is a fun and DIY idea. By printing or writing on the placemats, they become more personal to the event.

For example, the picture in the top left hand corner (via Cottage and Vine) is a DIY burlap mat that has writing in permanent marker on them. You can put the date, a name, famous quotes, a little doodle, etc. Anything you could possibly want for your guests to read or see will do. It’s quite simple to write on burlap. You can use Sharpies or paint or pastel (but make sure you set it so the pastel doesn’t come off on your guests).

The picture on the left (via milkbottles) is of chalk board placemats. Easy to write slash draw on and reuse. Great for all kinds of parties too, not just weddings. Great for kids or anyone who likes to doodle. Leave chalk on the table and let people have fun both before and after dinner is served. Have guests take pictures with their placemats at the end of the evening as a great momento of how fun and creative your friends and family are!

In the bottom left (also via Cottage and Vine) is an idea oh how either the burlap or the chalkboard can be used with full tabletop decor. A great earthy feel that is organic and original that can be used year round.

Some other great ideas may be crochet, knit, quilted, different colored wood, painted placards with either photos or prints. All of the things I’m coming up with go with a wooden barn table but could easily also go with  a table cloth idea if you really are looking at them. Find colors or textures that compliment each other and will stay still while on cloth. You can always use these ideas for different events or even dinner parties. These placemats will be used over and over again and people will love them every time.

  1. I?m impressed, I have to say. Actually rarely do I encounter a weblog that?s each educative and entertaining, and let me let you know, you might have hit the nail on the head. Your thought is excellent; the problem is one thing that not enough persons are speaking intelligently about. I’m very completely happy that I stumbled across this in my seek for one thing referring to this.
