When my friend and photographer Daryl Getman of DAG Photography put me in touch with Renee and Brook, I knew I had been put in touch with a really special couple. While Daryl and I have a mutual background in theater, Renee and Brook share a love for triathlons. Specifically Ironman Triathlons. Yeah that’s 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and to top it off, 26.2 mile run. My admiration for their physical ability to literally run until the end of the earth is something I don’t think I could ever do.
They met when Brook moved west to Southern California, he went to a meetup for other marathoners in the area. There, the director of the group introduced him to another marathoner who also worked in education. After exchanging numbers, they set up a date: a sensible Friday night sushi dinner and then a Saturday 80 mile bike ride. When the Best Man (and husband of Daryl) gave his toast, he spoke about how Brook knew Renee was The One when she “slingshot” past him during the ride.
I knew how important triathlons were to them, so I knew it had to be a part of their wedding. Their beach ceremony and brunch reception at Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach was the perfect setting for lovers of the elements. Because the setting was so beautiful already, it only took a little bit of decor to make it pop. Taking their race medals and adding them to their centerpieces gave the decor a personal touch. As favors, the bride’s father hand carved wooden wine holders and then branded the couple’s name into the wood.
A small wedding, cycling friends made up their bridal party and officiant along with family, close friends and their rescue pup, Willow. Shutters on the Beach provided a fresh and locally grown brunch and mimosa bar. A family friend also provided fresh pastries for the early morning crowd. I also have to shout out to Shutter’s catering staff for accommodating every guest’s needs in an efficient and pleasant manner. I also have to thank my day-of staff: Moriah, Daniel, and my non-groom Brandon.
The bride had a dress custom made by designer Hanna Hartnell that was the traditional white, but underneath a layer of hot pink silk peeked through. Pairing her dress were a pair of Cole Haan pumps and vintage family jewelry. Her MOH wore a beautiful coral lace dress by Adrianna Papell she found on Rent the Runway. Ladies, seriously consider renting the runway for both bridesmaids and bridal gowns. Check out our blog for more info on that.
I have to thank Renee and Brook for being my first couple here on the West Coast. Now, check out some of their amazing photos by DAG Photography.
